A stomach problem has forced French teenager Alize Cornet to retire from her opening-round match at the Gastein Ladies tournament in Austria.
Cornet trailed her Paraguayan opponent Rossana De Los Rios 2-6 6-2 3-2 when she called it quits.
The 18-year-old had been battling the problem since the weekend in Budapest, the scene of her maiden WTA title.
Cornet started strongly against world No.118 De Los Rios but her injury began to tell by the third set.
Top seed Agnes Szavay rebounded from a disappointing second-round loss on home soil in Budapest last week by posting a 6-4 6-2 triumph over Ukrainian lucky loser Viktoriya Kutuzova.
A quarter-finalist at this event last season, Szavay will next face Austrian wildcard Melanie Klaffner.
Other seeded players moving through to the second round on Wednesday were Caroline Wozniacki and Timea Bacsinszky.
Unseeded Croatian Karolina Sprem, an unexpected semi-finalist at Budapest last week, continued her strong play with a 6-3 6-4 upset of Russian eighth seed Vera Dushevina.
Meanwhile in the Bank of the West Classic in California, second seed Anna Chakvetadze progressed to the quarters but fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova bowed out in the second round.
Chakvetadze defeated Israeli Shahar Peer 6-3 6-4, while Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama was a 6-3 6-1 victor over Hantuchova.
Earlier in the day, Slovak Dominika Cibulkova defeated Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-2 6-3.
