American teenager Donald Young dumped two-time champion and number eight seed Tommy Haas out of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles on Tuesday after recording a 6-2 6-4 first-round victory.
The 19-year-old snapped a four-match losing streak as he broke the German's serve twice in each set.
Young will face Frenchman Marc Gicquel in the second round after wrapping up the victory in 87 minutes.
Fifth-seeded Marat Safin also advanced to the second round with a 6-3 6-4 win against American John Isner.
The former world number one needed a break of serve in each set to set up a meeting with Wayne Odesnik, who beat Bobby Reynolds 4-6 6-1 6-4 in an all-American first round match.
American Vince Spadea will face sixth-seeded compatriot Mardy Fish in the second round after defeating Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3 3-6 6-3.
American qualifier Amer Delic saved all five break-point chances faced against Israeli Dudi Sela while converting two of his six opportunities to secure a 6-4 6-4 victory.
Lucky loser Dusan Vemic of Serbia earned a second-round clash with top seed Andy Roddick after battling to a 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over American qualifier Sam Warburg in just short of three hours.
Italian qualifier Andrea Stoppini won his third career ATP match and his first since reaching the third round at 2006 Washington after taking just 61 minutes to defeat Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-1 6-3.
In the next round, the 28-year-old will seek to stop the 10 game winning streak of third seed Juan Martin del Potro.
The final match to finish on Tuesday saw seventh-seeded Spaniard Carlos Moya defeat Belgian wild card Xavier Malisse 6-2 1-6 7-6 (7-5).
