Jelena Jankovic will be the new world number one when the latest WTA rankings are unveiled on August 11.
The Serbian will take over from compatriot Ana Ivanovic, who became the first player from her country to reach top spot on June 9 in the wake of her French Open win.
"Since I was a young girl it's been my dream to become number one in the world," said Jankovic.
"When you get older, at least one day you can say you were number one and no one can take that away from you.
"You are in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour history books and it's a great achievement."
The achievement caps a remarkable turnaround for for Jankovic who was on the verge of quitting the game in 2006 after a run of 10 consecutive opening-round losses.
The 23-year-old is yet to win a grand slam singles title, but will reach number one on the back of her consistent performances over the last year, which included winning the Rome title this year and reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
She will become the 18th player to top the WTA rankings.
