Pauline Parmentier recorded a first-round victory over Tathiana Garbin 6-2 7-6 (7-3) at the Gastein Ladies tournament.

The fourth-seeded Frenchwoman downed Italy's Garbin in their first career meeting at this claycourt event and will move on to face the winner of the match between Julia Vakulenko of the Ukraine and Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

The only other seeded player in action was eighth seed Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic, who was the first seed through to the second round after a 6-7 (7-5) 7-5 6-4 triumph over Belgian Kirsten Flipkens.

Fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova, the ninth seed, was not as fortunate, suffering her first career defeat to Maret Ani of Estonia 7-5 4-6 6-3.

The 26-year-old Ani, who had lost to Zakopalova in both of their previous two meetings, next will face the winner between France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro and local favourite Yvonne Meusburger.

Elsewhere, Russian Galina Voskoboeva downed Croatian Sanda Mamic 4-6 6-4 6-0 while wild card entry Melanie Klaffner of Austria defeated Czech Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-4.
