Sanchez out on a high

Sanchez goes out on a high

25/11/2008 7:13 AM

Outgoing Spain captain Emilio Sanchez has wished his successor an equally enjoyable reign after leading his country to Davis Cup glory in Argentina.

The Spaniards overcame the loss of world No.1 Rafael Nadal to a knee injury to prevail 3-1 in Mar del Plata and secure a third Davis Cup title and a first on foreign soil.

Their feat was made all the more impressive for the fact the South Americans had not lost a home tie since 1998.

Sanchez was delighted to be standing down on a high.

"In next year's match against Serbia, I will not be there," he said. "I started a process three years ago and I think it has come to an end."

"It finished with a prize thanks to all these players. I hope the incoming captain can live the magic moments I live and he can be as lucky as I was."

"We have achieved something we haven't achieved before - we won the Davis Cup away."

"We have clinched a lot of achievements this year, as we won three matches away and we won the final as visitors too."

"Also, as the captain, I managed to have a solid doubles pairing and a competitive team as visitors. I think we are not aware yet of what we have achieved."

Feliciano Lopez saw off home favourite Juan Martin del Potro on Friday to level the match at 1-1 after David Nalbandian had beaten David Ferrer.

Lopez then linked up with Fernando Verdasco to sink Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri in the doubles on Saturday, before Verdasco clinched the win with a courageous five-set triumph over Jose Acasuso on Sunday.

Sanchez acknowledged Lopez's win against Del Potro on Friday had been crucial.

"Feliciano's victory on Friday gave us life, after Nalbandian's victory earlier had us down a little bit," he said.

"Then the doubles gave us the lead and Fernando managed to overcome a two-sets-to-one deficit. He deserved the victory."

"I also want to highlight David's (Ferrer) friendship in the team. He was there even after I told him he was not going to play today."

"He was a motivation for Fernando. He was there every minute, cheering for him."

Argentina captain Alberto Mancini refused to reveal whether he intended to remain at the helm following his team's defeat.

"This is something I have already decided, but the only people who know are me and the people who need to be aware. This is not the right moment to talk about that," he said.

Mancini went on to hit out at the press for distracting his players with talk of fights within the Argentina camp.

"We have to learn a lot from all this experience, not only the players and the association, but also journalists, because they said yesterday that the players fought and punched each other after the doubles match," he said

"That's ridiculous. What the media publish affects the players' heads."

The 39-year-old also insisted his team should not be seen as 'failures' after the hotly-contested final.

"I think people who say we have totally failed are quite foolish," he said.

"I cannot understand how a person can think that. It is a lack of respect to the guys."

"We had a solid team. We had two very strong single players (Nalbandian and Del Potro). Unfortunately, Del Potro was not 100 per cent physically and he then suffered a problem.

"The guys did their best really, but Spain were great rivals."
