Spanish seeds Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez tumbled out of the Countrywide Classic after suffering second-round defeats by Frenchman Florent Serra and German Denis Gremelmayr.
Second seed Verdasco suffered a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) defeat by Serra, who secured a first quarter-final appearance since reaching the Estoril semi-finals in April, while 26-year-old Gremelmayr also recorded a straight-sets victory over fourth seed Lopez.
Gremelmayr saved all five of Lopez's break point chances in the second set to close out the win in one hour and 55 minutes to also secure a first quarter-final appearance since reaching back-to-back semi-finals in Estoril and Barcelona in April.
Lopez, a finalist earlier this year in Dubai, falls to a 15-19 record while Umag winner Verdasco falls to 34-20.
Sixth seed American Mardy Fish ousted countryman Vincent Spadea 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-0 in one hour and 51 minutes.
After losing the first set, Fish dominated and won 80 percent of the points played on his first serve.
He had 14 aces compared to Spadea's three, while Fish was successful in fighting off eight of nine break points and breaking six times to set-up a quarter-final meeting with Serra.
