Justine Henin and Ana Ivanovic have made winning starts to their respective campaigns at the German Open.
Henin overwhelmed Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 6-0 6-2 in the second round.
The top-seeded Belgian improved her win-loss record to 28-3 at the claycourt event, having won titles in 2002, 2003 and 2005.
One of the top eight seeds to receive a first-round bye, Henin is playing her first event since slipping to a 6-2 6-0 loss to Serena Williams in the Miami quarter-finals last month.
The world No.1 has not played since because of a right knee injury.
Henin, also playing her first clay event of the season, may get the chance to avenge that defeat as the players face a potential quarter-final showdown in Berlin.
Awaiting Henin in the third round is 13th seed Dinara Safina, who advanced with a 6-4 6-3 win against Kaia Kanepi.
Second seed and defending champion Ivanovic of Serbia is also through to the third round after easing past Akgul Amanmuradova 7-6 (7/0) 6-2.
Ivanovic's victory takes her winning run to seven matches.
The 20-year-old Australian Open finalist will next face unseeded Sybille Bammer.
The runner-up to Ivanovic last year, third-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova also opened with a win as she overcame Catalina Castano 6-3 6-2.
Kuznetsova plays 15th-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko in the next round.
Victoria Azarenka of Belarus produced the upset of the day with a stunning 1-6 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 triumph over sixth-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
Fourth seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia found herself trailing 4-1 early in her match with China's Shuai Peng, but recovered to post a 7-5 6-0 victory.
Awaiting her is unseeded Russian Maria Kirilenko, who beat compatriot and 16th seed Nadia Petrova 6-3 6-3.
Eleventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska was another winner, 6-1 6-1 over Angelika Bachmann, and booked a third round match with fifth seed Serena Williams.
