From talisman to groom

From talisman to groom

It's been a big week for Thailand's Datsakorn Thonglao. Spliced between the two biggest football games of his career, Thailand's talisman has been probably the biggest day in his life.

If the Australians want to know about pressure, then perhaps they could learn from the Thai No.7, who, in the space of four days will have played architect to Thailand's first-ever Asian Cup victory, been married and then have taken on Australia for a spot in the second round of the tournament.

Exactly why Datsakorn decided to tie the knot between the two biggest games of his life is unknown but it perhaps sums up the Thais approach to this tournament.

"With positive attitude, the Thai team has used their determination in playing to enjoy," coach Chanvit Polchovin said through a translator. "They enjoy the game they are playing. As you have mentioned, the Thai team seems to be relaxed and enjoy the training sessions. Why are they not always serious?"

"We will say this is in the Thai culture we try to enjoy, and we have fun in what we are doing. Once we get onto the field, of course we want to win. If you want to win, you want to play, you want to enjoy, no matter what the result, we'll see."

The contrast between the Australian and Thai approach to Monday's do-or-die clash at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok could not be any starker. The Australian team is under siege at the moment with coach Graham Arnold fending off suggestions that he could be replaced, while the players have been forced to deny there is any rift between members of the playing group.

The Thais, meanwhile, gathered for Datsakorn's wedding on Sunday, with coach and captain having to depart the reception to attend the mandatory pre-match press conference.

"Today is a very happy day for Datsakorn, he's getting married today. Tomorrow we believe it's going to be another happy day, because all the team-mates and the coach and the staff gave him a blessing," Chanvit said. "We'll decide later if Datsakorn will start the game or not."

The loss of Datsakorn for matrimonial reasons would be one of the more bizarre excuses for a player's absence in a major tournament. One of the most popular players in Thailand, he was the man who directed the 2-0 defeat of Oman, and his loss would be a major dent to the host nation's ambitions of making the final eight.

"If Datsakorn can not start the game tomorrow, we have other player to play in his position. During the preparations in Germany he was not there," the coach said.

And Chanvit is fully aware of the task he has ahead of him, with or without his best player.

"We have to prepare our best for tomorrow because Australia are one of the greatest teams in this tournament. We need to make sure we do our homework well," he said.

"Australia is a very good team, but all the teams who are going to play Australia are going to do their homework very well," he said.

Arnold made the comment on Saturday that he believes Australia has a winning culture when it came to sport, while Thailand does not have that attitude. Chanvit said that while the Australian players are more accustomed to high pressure matches, he is confident his players can handle the
