Marseille stretches lead

Marseille stretches lead

27/04/2009 8:19 AM

Goals from Benoit Cheyrou and Mamadou Niang helped Ligue 1 leader Marseille come from behind to win 2-1 at Lille.

Eden Hazard had given Lille the lead after 49 minutes as an upset looked on the cards.

But the European hopes of the home side suffered a setback as Marseille was level within five minutes.

Cheyrou's goal brought the visitors back on level terms after 54 minutes and three minutes later Niang secured the three points.

St Etienne remains deep in relegation trouble after it was beaten 3-1 by rampant Nice at the Stade du Ray.

Chaouki Ben Saada and Stathis Tavlaridis, with an own goal, put the hosts well in charge by the break and substitute Eric Mouloungui added a third in the 73rd minute.

The victory consolidates Nice's position in eighth place but Les Verts, which grabbed a last-minute consolation through Araujo Ilan, stay in the drop zone, third from bottom.

Ten-man Sochaux claimed a valuable point in its relegation battle with Valenciennes courtesy of a last-minute penalty.

Home goalkeeper Teddy Richert was dismissed seven minutes into the second half for a foul on Johan Audel and VA took advantage in the 61st minute, scoring through Amara Karba Bangoura.

But Vaclav Sverkos levelled from the spot in the dying seconds to claim a point for his side.

Nancy made itself all but safe with a comfortable 2-0 win over relegation rivals Nantes.

Julien Feret scored the opener 10 minutes after the interval before Andre Luiz sealed the win from the penalty spot.

Two goals in the last five minutes by Ireneusz Jelen secured all three points for Auxerre against a spirited Caen side.

The 2-1 victory for mid-table Auxerre came after strugglers Caen had taken the lead on the hour through Gregory Proment.

Jelen grabbed the equaliser when he punished a poor back pass with five minutes to go before netting a second two minutes from the end.

Mauro Cetto snatched an 88th-minute equaliser for Toulouse to keep it in the hunt for a European place.

Cetto pounced on a slip from Lorient keeper Lionel Cappone to cancel out Andre Ayew's opener just four minutes earlier.

A late goal by Chu Young Park was sufficient for Monaco to claim all three points in its mid-table fixture at Le Mans.

Grenoble moved up to 11th place with a hard-fought 1-0 win at rock-bottom Le Havre with a goal from Pierre Boya five minutes before half-time.
