McKinna tipping exciting shootout

McKinna tipping exciting shootout

25/07/2008 3:43 PM

Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna is tipping another exciting shootout when his team takes on Sydney FC in the second round of the Hyundai A-League Pre-Season Cup on Sunday.

Former Qantas Socceroos star Mark Bosnich is the biggest inclusion in the Mariners' squad and will be joined by fellow triallist Predrag Bojic as the only new names in the line-up.

McKinna confirmed on Friday that Bosnich will start in goal for the Mariners with Danny Vukovic relegated to the bench.

Dean Heffernan is the only omission from the team that lost 1-0 to Wellington Phoenix last weekend after aggravating an ankle injury.

McKinna expects a large crowd at Bluetongue Stadium as the teams clash for the 14th time in A-League competition.

"It's always great to play Sydney, especially at home at Bluetongue Stadium, there will be a good Pre-Season Cup crowd there," McKinna said.

"Hopefully by match day we'll have a few more bodies to select from, against the Phoenix we had a few boys that did well to last the game or get through most of it and we got out of it reasonably unscathed."

"But, against Sydney, everybody is up, whether it's Pre-Season Cup, a friendly game or whatever, it's a big game for the club."

The two clubs have built up a fierce rivalry over the years, with Sydney winning seven of the 13 matches played - including arguably the greatest match in A-League history when Ufuk Talay struck a 95th-minute winner to see Sydney home 5-4.

There have been 26 different goal scorers in matches between the two east coast rivals - although McKinna was hoping a repeat of that famous match last year didn't eventuate.

"Hopefully there's not nine goals in this game, I don't think I could handle that twice within a year," he said.

"The atmosphere that both sets of supporters groups create is fantastic and the players take that on to the park."

"We've put on some great games in the past, some really exciting ones, they're always great games and for people that want to come out and watch a great game of football, Sunday will be a great occasion."
