Win just the tonic says Iraq coach

Win just the tonic says Iraq coach

14/07/2007 8:43 AM

Iraq coach Jorvan Vieira says the best part of his team's memorable 3-1 Asian Cup win over Australia is what it will do to the spirit of the people in the war-torn nation.

The canny Brazilian, who has only been in charge of the team for less than two months, is now on the verge of leading his team to the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup for the fourth successive tournament with the team only needing a draw against Oman in its final game to qualify for the last eight.

Vieira said it was just the tonic needed for a country being gripped by a civil war.

"One reason I am happy is because in Iraq they take their guns out and shoot them into the air after the team has had a victory," he said.

"And I would rather see them shooting in the air than shooting at another person."

"There would have been 90 minutes of peace during this game and hopefully now there can be another two days of peace."

Vieira also used the war analogy when it came to describing his strikers, who terrorised Australia's dreadful defence.

"We are looking for peace in Iraq but not for the Australian defence from our strikers," he said.

Vieira said he did not believe his team's win over the tournament favourites - who at 48 are ranked 36 places above the Iraqis - was the surprise everyone was making it out to be.

"I spoke before this match and said we were ready for this game but some people didn't believe me," he said.

However Vieira, who was assistant coach of Morocco when they became the first African nation to reach the second round of the World Cup back in 1986, refused to take any credit for Iraq's great performance - which sees them top Group A with one round remaining.

"I am not a magician, I did not pull something out of my hat - all the credit goes to the players," he said.
