Martin Rominger withstood challenging conditions at the Vietnam Masters, grabbing the lead on Thursday through a six-under 66 round as Australian Jason King finds himself just two strokes off the pace
Switzerland's Rominger, though, sank an eagle and five birdies against a lone bogey in his 66 at the Hanoi Phoenix Golf Resort for a flying start to the inaugural event in Vietnam.
He is one-stroke ahead of Taiwan's Lin Wen-hong who produced an impressive putting performance on his way to a five-under 67.
Malaysia's Iain Steel was amongst those in a share of third place following a 68 and he was bunched with Korea's Mo Joong-kyung, Thailand's Chapchai Nirat and Boonchu Ruangkit, Chang Tse-peng from Taiwan and King.
"Everything went quite well. I put many shots on the fairway and I was also able to hit many shots very close to the pins. Overall, I'm very happy," said Rominger whose highlight of the day was an eagle on the 12th hole.
Australia's other entrant, Mitchell Brown, is also still well within contention, having carded a two-under 70 on day one.
