Big win for Munce

Munce takes out Villiers Stakes

20/12/2008 3:55 PM

The career of comeback jockey Chris Munce was given a massive kick along on Saturday when he won a thrilling G2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) aboard Something Anything at Randwick.

So close was the photo finish, involving Something Anything and Hey Elvis, Munce was forced to wait several minutes after the race to receive confirmation of his win in the $200,000 feature.

Rags To Riches grabbed third in between the pair ahead of Causeyacan in a nail-biting finish where little more than half a head separated the first five or so horses over the line.

While not the biggest win of Munce's career, it was his most important since returning to race riding earlier this month after serving a 20-month jail term in Hong Kong and Sydney for his role in a tipping scandal.

"It's a great day, there's no doubt about that," a jubilant Munce told TVN.

Race favourite Sniper's Bullet, coming off two Group One placings in Perth, finished towards the rear after copping a check at a crucial stage in the straight.
