Connoisseur wins Jubilee

Connoisseur wins Jubilee

June could hardly be more jubilant for Newmarket trainer Michael Bell as he added to Sariska's Investec Oaks win by capturing Royal Ascot's Golden Jubilee Stakes with Art Connoisseur.

Just two weeks on from landing his second Epsom Classic and Bell was again celebrating a top-level success as Tom Queally brought his three-year-old from the rear to claim the highlight on the final day of the meeting.

A strong international challenge assembled in opposition but the global raiders found the home defence too strong. South African J J The Jet Plane cut out the early running but he weakened along with Hong Kong superstar Sacred Kingdom through the final two furlongs, while Australia's Takeover Target had earlier been scratched.

Queally, meanwhile, capitalised on a gap along the stands rail to bring the 20-1 chance through and fend off Wesley Ward's American raider, Cannonball, by a neck.

A Guineas campaign for the winner was scraped after he failed to stay in his trial, and the colt - in which Bell has a quarter share - blossomed on the return to the track at which he blitzed the field in last year's Coventry.

Bell said: "He was second to Mastercraftsman in Ireland last year after he won the Coventry, then he fractured a cannonbone in the Gimcrack which everyone knew about."

"We ran him in the Free Handicap to see if he would stay a mile for the Guineas. He clearly ran like a sprinter in that race and this has been the target all along."

"I would have been more confident but a month ago he popped a splint and was very sore on it. He swam twice a day for a fortnight, then he came back in and has been cantering for a fortnight."

"He worked very nicely but this is still a big surprise. I thought he was a boy against men, but he answered every call and Tom gave him a peach of a ride."

The ride was a lucrative spare for Queally after Jamie Spencer was suspended for careless riding in the Oaks - a race in which Queally partnered the narrowly-beaten runner-up Midday.

Hayley Turner would normally have then stepped into the plate, but the leading female jockey is currently sidelined by the British Horseracing Authority on medical grounds following a fall earlier in the year.

Bell added: "I am delighted Tom rode him but it is bad luck Jamie is suspended. Hayley would then normally have ridden him and I have told the BHA it is wrong that she can't ride - it has just cost her about £25,000."

Art Connoisseur, who will now head towards the Darley July for which he is a general 8-1 chance, was Queally's first Group One success.

The rider, whose only previous Royal Ascot win came in the 2004 Windsor Castle Stakes aboard Chateau Istana, said: "Jamie got suspended and this makes up for Michael beating us in the Oaks."

"It's great to be on board and the horse did it very well. I just gave him time, got a split and it was do or die then up the rails."

"I feel sorry for Jamie and he was a chance ride so it is great to make the most of it."

"It is years since I rode my first winner here, so it means all the more to win here after a long gap."

Ward came within a whisker of ending Royal Ascot on a high after twice striking during the week with the first-ever American winners at the meeting."

He said: "Any time you get beat it is a tough one - it is a bit like kissing your sister when you are second, but it is an honour to be placed in a race like this."

"The original intention was to go for the July Cup but he has hard two hard races quickly so I'll have to talk it over with his owner, Mr Ramsey."

Lesson In Humility has improved all season and continued the forward momentum when taking third place for trainer Karl Burke.

The trainer commented: "When a filly is in form in the way she has been there is no telling how much improvement they can make and after that it wouldn't be a surprise if she was able to win a Group One."

"She's not in the July Cup and I doubt whether she will be supplemented."

J J The Jet Plane stayed on again to finish fourth, and his trainer Mike de Kock said: "It was really a three-furlong race because they cantered for the first three furlongs and it has long been my suspicion that he wants seven furlongs or a mile."

"We will still head to the July Cup now as it is a stiff six furlongs there."
