Guyno wins Perth Cup

Another shot at the Melbourne Cup awaits Guyno after the talented West Australian stayer's victory in the Perth Cup on New Year's Day.
Guyno ($9.50), who finished 12th in this year's Melbourne Cup, produced a storming finish to edge out The Fuzz ($3.80) by a half head with Ballack ($5.50) third in the 2400m race.
It completed a fantastic training effort from Lou Luciani and son Dion, who had to get the former WA Derby winner back up after his Melbourne spring campaign.
A below par run first-up in the Cox Stakes put the punters of Guyno for the New Year's Day feature, but not Luciani or jockey John Whiting, who came up with a clever plan for the five-year-old.
They settled him well off the pace, and gave him one shot at victory in the final 200m. It was a race which changed complexion quickly in the final stages. A furlong out, it looked as if Exhilarating, who had staged a bold bid for victory on the turn, would hold on, but he weakened late.
Ballack then looked the likely winner before The Fuzz and Guyno made late runs from well back. Guyno bobbed his head to prevail in a thrilling finish and delight the locals.
