Newport and Light Vision penalised

Newport and Light Vision penalised

06/10/2008 2:10 PM

Weekend winners Light Vision and Newport have both received penalties for the major spring handicaps with Newport given an extra 1.5kgs for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup and Light Vision an extra 1.0kg for the Melbourne Cup.

Newport bounced back to form with a win in The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday and has moved into Cups calculations.

Racing Victoria's Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter said while the 1.5kg penalty to Newport was more than the 1kg that Railings and Tawqeet had copped before going on to win the Caulfield Cup, the 2007 Brisbane Cup winner was coming off a lower base. The Paul Perry-trained grey will now carry 51.5kg in both races.

Light Vision, who is not entered in the Caulfield Cup, has been given a 1kg penalty for the Melbourne Cup for his win in The Bart Cummings over 2500 metres at Flemington on Saturday. The Robert Smerdon-trained rising star will carry 51kg in the two-mile classic.

"The penalty issued to Light Vision reflects his excellent form since the Cup weights were issued in early September having won twice at Flemington including his Bart Cummings win and a hard fought second to Zagreb in the Naturalism Stakes," Carpenter said.

Third declarations for the Caulfield Cup and Tatts Cox Plate (2040m) and second declarations for the Melbourne Cup will be taken at 12 noon on Wednesday.
