Tess takes Chelmsford

Tess storms to Chelmsford glory

09/09/2008 4:22 PM

Underrated five-year-old Gallant Tess has caused a big upset by claiming the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on Tuesday.

Star four-year-old Triple Honour was sent out a short priced favourite for the $200,000 event, but Gallant Tess proved too strong in the final 100 metres to run out an impressive winner.

After winning the Group One Doncaster Handicap in the autumn, Triple Honour was expected to put in a repeat performance of its first-up run where it impressively won at Rosehill.

However, when jockey Glen Boss attempted to shake up Triple Honour at the top of the straight, the Chris Waller-trained gelding attempted to duck in and cost itself any chance of victory.

Triple Honour did eventually get going to run second, Kishkat finished third, while Fiumicino and Annenkov were well beaten in fourth and fifth places respectively.
