Bennett: All Stars game no joke

NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett is adamant his players will match the pride and passion shown by the Indigenous All Stars when the two sides face off on the Gold Coast on February 13.

Bennett was on hand at NRL headquarters on Tuesday to unveil how fans can play a part in selecting his side to take on a loaded line-up featuring the likes of Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston, Justin Hodges and retiring great Wendell Sailor.

While the master mentor admits the pride of representing their people will be a major source of motivation for the Indigenous players, he dismissed suggestions his charges won't approach the clash with equal intensity.

"I'm dealing with guys like Darren Lockyer and Benji Marshall, guys that I've coached," Bennet said.

"Look, they compete at a training session if you tell them there's a game on they want to win that game of touch against each other."

"And they're professionals, credibility's on the line as well so I don't think it (motivation) is going to be a real issue for us."

"There'll be a lot of ribbing and that going on before they arrive in the camp so there'll be no doubt the All Stars will know just how important it is to the indigenous team, and they'll be wanting to make sure that they're mentally prepared otherwise they know they'll get beaten by 30 or 40 points."

With Kangaroos and Kiwi Test stars Cam Smith, Lockyer, Marshall and Adam Blair already in the 20-man All Stars squad, supporters have one month to nominate their favourite players for the remaining 16 spots.

Stage two voting will then commence, with fans asked to select the top player in each position.

The player who scores the highest number of overall votes will earn selection with each NRL club to provide one of the remaining 16 players.

Bennett, who revealed Marshall will play half-back and Lockyer five-eighth, is confident the public will choose a team capable of matching Neil Henry's impressive side.

"It's a great concept for the fans and I'm sure they'll come up with a great team," he said.

"Rugby league people are passionate about their football and there's plenty of knowledge out there."

"A few might find out just how hard it can be to put a team together but I'm sure they are going to want to be involved."

The match will be played in 20-minute quarters with unlimited interchange.

The 'double try' concept - which allows teams to forgo a conversion attempt in exchange for one extra play and the chance to score eight points instead of six - will also be trialled.

Bennett says the finer details of the experimental rule are yet to be finalised and doesn't expect it to be introduced into the NRL in the near future.

"It's got some merit, it won't happen for another decade if it's going to happen at all but it's an opportunity to have a look at it," Bennett said.

"If there's some benefit there and it excites the fans ... then I'm sure the administrators would make the change but it won't happen for four or five years."

Television viewers will also be able to eavesdrop on the coaches' quarter and three-quarter time speeches with both mentors to wear microphones, while the video referee will explain his decisions to the television commentary team throughout the course of the game.
