Bradford battles to victory

08/06/2009 6:04 AM

Bradford was indebted to a perfect goalkicking display from skipper Paul Deacon as it kept alive its slender Super League play-off hopes with a thrilling 36-22 win over Wakefield.

With both sides scoring five tries, Deacon provided the difference, landing all eight kicks at goal in marked contrast to Wakefield's Danny Brough, who managed just one from five attempts.

Defeat was tough on Wakefield centre Sean Gleeson, who scored a first-half hat-trick of tries after being called into the side as a replacement for the injured Ryan Atkins.

Atkins, who has a shoulder injury, is rated a 50-50 chance to line up for England against France on Saturday.

Bradford's solitary international, Sam Burgess, could also be a doubt after being sin-binned, along with Wakefield captain Jason Demetriou, for his part in a second-half flare-up and could be forced to face a disciplinary hearing.

Steve Menzies and Chris Nero both bagged a brace of tries for the Bulls with Julien Rinaldi completing the scoring, while Steve Snitch and Scott Grix joined Gleeson on the scoresheet for the Wildcats.

On Saturday, Catalans Dragons winger Cyril Stacul scored a try in the corner 30 seconds from time to give his side a stunning 32-30 success over Leeds in France.

The hosts led 28-12 in the 69th minute after scoring 18 unanswered points at the start of the second half, before Leeds rallied with three tries in eight astonishing minutes to lead 30-28 going into the final set of six.

From a short kick-off, Lee Smith spilled the ball and the excellent Thomas Bosc and Adam Mogg created space for Jason Croker to send in his winger for the clinching score.

Bosc missed the conversion after the hooter but his six successful kicks won an ultimately breathless match which ended five tries all.

Castleford suffered a 34-18 home defeat by Warrington just six days after its shattering last-gasp Carnegie Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat at Huddersfield.

To rub salt into its wounds it was against an in-form Wolves side who themselves booked a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Castleford, who lost for the fourth time in five league and cup games, led through efforts from Kirk Dixon and Richard Owen but went into the interval trailing by four points after Lee Briers and Louis Anderson both scored converted tries.

Michael Shenton's try reduced the deficit to six points but a double from Vinnie Anderson, and seven tries in all, put the Tigers to the sword.

Harlequins produced a dominant second-half display to overcome a determined Celtic Crusaders 26-6 in a bruising encounter at the Stoop.

Quins led by just two points at the break, but tries from Chris Melling, Luke Williamson and Chad Randall after the interval saw the hosts strengthen their grip on fifth spot in the standings.

On Friday night, Sean Long had given Hull's fans a tantalising glimpse of its future and a stark reminder of its present as he inspired St Helens to a record-equalling 30-6 win at the KC Stadium - and in the process extended their lead at the top of the table.

The mercurial halfback, one of the most decorated and recognisable players of the modern era, announced on Monday that he would be joining Hull at the end of the season after 12 years with the Saints, but there was no suggestion of any divided loyalties for the 32-year-old as he inspired
