Fittler against Origin shift

Fittler against Origin shift

08/06/2008 7:34 PM

Sydney Roosters coach Brad Fittler remains against a proposal to shift State of Origin matches to a stand-alone weekend despite his weakened side copping a 42-0 pasting at the hands of Manly on Sunday.

Missing Origin reps Willie Mason, Nat Myles, Anthony Tupou and Craig Fitzgibbon, the Roosters were awful, conceding eight tries in a forgettable display.

But a realistic Fittler doubts the season's itinerary will be re-drawn to ensure clubs are not missing key personnel before Origin matches.

"We've signed TV agreements and they're not going to cancel (eight club) games a week," he pointed out.

"You want more in one hand and are giving less in the other."

"I don't think they're going to it. Whatever we're got at the moment I'm happy to do it."

"(You've just got to) deal with it."

Fittler was understanding of the difficulties his side faced against a Sea Eagles team missing just one rep player - Brett Stewart.

"We seemed to start off the pace and we were going at a different speed," he said.

"We never backed each other. We never had a crack at any stage. I thought we just submitted."

"We looked second rate. The score indicates how good they were and where we stood."

Skipper Braith Anasta added: "We tried to talk ourselves into it today. We didn't really prepare as well and we would have liked - we were ahead of ourselves."

"I could feel it before the game but we'll learn from it."

Unexcitable Manly coach Des Hasler denied his team had the wood on the Roosters despite racking up 98 points to zero in two games.

He simply praised his side for getting the job done in slippery conditions before a Brookvale Oval crowd of 13,842.

"I'm pretty pleased about the other side of the scoreboard, the nil factor," Hasler said.

"I thought we were fairly clinical in our work today."

"We'll take the two points and move on."
