Kangaroos name squad

Kangaroos selectors have recalled Parramatta duo Jarryd Hayne and Nathan Hindmarsh as well as Melbourne pair Cooper Cronk and Ryan Hoffman in a 24-man squad for the Four Nations that also includes rookies Robbie Farah, Michael Jennings and Josh Morris but contains no Dragons players.

But the selection of Penrith's Trent Waterhouse is perhaps the biggest shock, the 28-year-old having not played for Australia since running out for the last of his 10 Tests four years ago.

And while 2009 premiers the Storm are well represented with a quarter of the squad and the Broncos and Panthers contribute four players each this year's minor premiers the Dragons have been snubbed.

Unable to consider veteran Steve Price, Luke Bailey or Brett Stewart because of injury, selectors have also left out Anthony Laffranchi, Darius Boyd, Glenn Stewart and Brent Kite from the team that beat New Zealand in the Anzac Test in May.

There are also doubts over several players with Israel Folau considered the most unlikely to come up but Hindmarsh, Anthony Watmough, Luke Lewis, Kurt Gidley, Petero Civoniceva and Ben Hannant all carrying niggly injuries and coach Tim Sheens has foreshadowed the possibility of adding shadow players to the squad as cover.

"There are some issues with quite a number of the players still so it's a long way from being finalised," Sheens said of his squad.

"I'm sure everyone announced will make themselves available but at the end of the day ... if they can't run and complete training (on Tuesday) then we've got to have a think about it because we can't take any and add to that squad (once in England)."

"I may call a couple (of emergency players) in tomorrow, I'm just waiting on further medical advice today."

After playing one Test two years ago before representing Fiji at last year's World Cup, Hayne has been rewarded for his irresistible form in the second half of the season but still has a battle on his hands to unseat incumbent and Clive Churchill medalist Billy Slater.

Hindmarsh, who will delay shoulder surgery after winning his recall, has likewise been recalled after helping the Eels into the grand final, two years after playing the last of his 18 Tests, while premiership stars Cronk and Hoffman will get the chance to play their second and third Tests respectively.

Meanwhile Wests Tigers skipper Farah, Bulldogs flyer Morris and his team-mate Ben Hannant, Canberra's David Shillington, Panthers stars Jennings and Lewis and Storm prop Brett White are the new faces in the squad to be led again by veteran campaigner Darren Lockyer.

Australia opens tournament against New Zealand in London on October 24 and will also do battle with England and then France before the top two teams from the preliminary games face off at Elland Road in Leeds on November 14.

The other incumbents apart from Slater are centres Greg Inglis and Justin Hodges, halves pairing Lockyer and Johnathan Thurston, hooker Cam Smith, forwards Civoniceva, Paul Gallen, Anthony Watmough and Sam Thaiday, winger Folau and star utility Gidley.

Kangaroos' Four Nations squad:
Petero Civoniceva (Panthers), Cooper Cronk (Storm), Robbie Farah (Wests Tigers), Israel Folau (Broncos), Paul Gallen (Sharks), Kurt Gidley (Knights), Ben Hannant (Bulldogs), Jarryd Hayne (Eels), Nathan Hindmarsh (Eels), Justin Hodges (Broncos), Ryan Hoffman (Storm), Greg Inglis (Storm), Michael Jennings (Panthers), Darren Lockyer (c, Broncos), Luke Lewis (Panthers), Josh Morris (Bulldogs), David Shillington (Raiders), Billy Slater (Storm), Cam Smith (Storm), Sam Thaiday (Broncos), Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys), Trent Waterhouse (Panthers), Anthony Watmough (Sea Eagles), Brett White (Storm)
