Manly to appeal fine

Manly to appeal fine, accepts Stewart ban

11/03/2009 6:33 PM

Manly will not appeal Brett Stewart's four-match suspension for breaking the NRL's code of conduct but will fight the $100,000 fine imposed on it following the club's ill-fated season launch.

After meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the Sea Eagles board reluctantly accepted Stewart's ban but not the fine.

Despite Stewart being charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl after the season launch, Manly angered the NRL by selecting the star full-back in the side to meet the Bulldogs in Saturday night's season-opener.

"The NRL's decision to suspend Brett Stewart for four matches is contrary to the Sea Eagles board's resolution, however, in consultation with Brett's management and legal advisor we have agreed to accept their decision," chairman Scott Penn said.

"The NRL's decision to fine the club $100,000 will be addressed by the board once the breach notice has been officially served."

"The club will be invoking our right of appeal when the notice is received."

The board also revealed a new set of guidelines governing drinking at official functions.

"The board would like to state for the record that we are very disappointed by the events that took place after our season launch."

"There is no doubt if we had our time again we would do things differently."

"The Sea Eagles board ratified today a policy which places an alcohol ban on all players at official NRL, Sea Eagles and sponsor functions effective immediately."

"Management will reinforce the Sea Eagles code of conduct with players and ensure that they take greater responsibility for their individual actions relating to alcohol."

Meanwhile, NRL boss David Gallop indicated Stewart's suspension could be increased if new information surrounding the sexual assault allegations made against him comes to light.

The ban is currently due to end the weekend after Stewart's first court appearance on April 7.

The Australian No.1 is the face of the game's advertising campaign and, according to Gallop, has let the code down.

While making it clear the NRL was imposing the ban on Stewart for being in a drunken state after the launch - and not the subsequent incident that has led to police charges - Gallop reserved the right to review the situation after the ban expires.

"It's too early to say. It well may be that more light gets shed on this situation so I can't foresee where that will be in five weeks' time," a clearly upset Gallop said.

"We've certainly got an undertaking from Manly that they're going to continue to review their position on that and we'll be talking to them about that."

"It's certainly possible that more information will come to light and that may well change things, but that is not where we are at today."

Elaborating on why the NRL had suspended Stewart for four rounds after Manly controversially chose him to start the season on Saturday, Gallop said: "Brett Stewart was chosen to be the face of our ad campaign and to launch the start of our 2009 season."

"That was a great honour that was placed on him and his conduct in terms of being refused service at the Manly Wharf Hotel and being asked to leave sometime after the Manly function did not respect the privilege that was given to him."

"He was placed in a position of great honour and he let the game down badly."

"The NRL board wished to express their anger at the situation the game's been
