Sea Eagles destroy Roosters

Sea Eagles destroy Roosters

08/06/2008 5:40 PM

Manly has embarrassed the Sydney Roosters for the second time inside a year, thrashing Brad Fittler's side 42-0 at Brookvale Oval.

Almost 12 months to the day the Sea Eagles belted the Tricolours 56-0 at the same ground - a result which led to Roosters coach Chris Anderson exiting the club - the home side poured on the points again.

Manly led 14-0 at half-time and went on with the job after the break, falling just short of the half-century mark.

The Sea Eagles scored eight tries to nil to claim top spot on the table on for and against with one round 13 match remaining.

The Roosters were missing their State of Origin stars but there was still no excuse for a dreadful performance.

Sea Eagles five-eighth Jamie Lyon stood out among a host of good performers, laying on several of his side's tries and scoring one himself.

Manly centre Steve Bell, in the sights of French club Catalans, opened the scoring after just seven minutes.

The former Origin back picked up the ball from dummy half and powered his way through two defenders to cross for a soft try.

Matt Orford's conversion made it 6-0.

Bell and Orford combined for Manly's second try three minutes later, the Sea Eagles skipper darting through two players and popping a pass for Bell to claim his double.

Orford's conversion struck the upright but it was looking ominous for the Roosters at 10-0.

Manly dominated possession and field position, helped by the Roosters' horrendous error rate, but had to wait until the 33rd minute before scoring their third try.

Winger David Williams, picking up a loose Lyon pass which hit the ground, rounded Brent Grose to stroll over in the corner.

Orford was astray with the extras, the Roosters somewhat fortunate to be only 14-0 down.

The second half started much the same as the first, the visitors making mistake after mistake and the Sea Eagles capitalising.

Just seven minutes in, Steve Menzies made a bust and found Lyon in support.

Lyon produced a lovely flick pass to send Orford in.

Lyon did it all himself a few minutes later, accepting a loose carry from Roosters winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall, who had a forgettable game, and running 35m to score.

At that stage it was 26-0 and a repeat of the Roosters' 56-0 massacre loomed large.

That possibility grew in the 54th minutes when the Sea Eagles put on the try of the game.

It started with Lyon's inside ball to Michael Robertson, who hit a gap and found Menzies in support.

The veteran took a low pass and sent Anthony Watmough over under the posts with a beautiful reverse pass.

Orford's conversion took the score to 32-0

Further tries to Nick Bradley-Qalilawa and Williams rounded off an emphatic victory.
