Matulino gets a start

Matulino gets a start

30/10/2009 5:42 AM

New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney will give a debut to 20-year-old Warriors second rower Ben Matulino in one of two enforced changes to the side that drew 20-20 with Australia.

With backrowers Bronson Harrison and Jeff Lima both been ruled out with calf injuries, Kearney promotes the St Helens-bound Iosia Soliola to the second row and the Leeds-bound Greg Eastwood takes his place on the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury.

"It's terrific to see Ben having his opportunity to play Test football so early in his career," said Kearney.

"He has worked really hard ever since we've been in camp and deserves his chance.

"While it's disappointing for Bronson and for us that he won't be able to play this week, Sia has done a fantastic job off the bench in the last two weeks. That made it easy for us."

Kearney warned his players not to take the French side lightly on their own soil, especially after contests in France between the two sides in recent years.

Of the Kiwis side that beat France 22-14 two years ago in Paris only Sam Perrett, Thomas Leuluai and Fuifui Moimoi remain.

"We need to be mindful about working to improve in a lot of areas of our game and being concerned with getting our preparation right to give us every chance of putting together the sort of performance that will be required," Kearney said.

Meanwhile, France has called two New Zealand-born players into its squad for Saturday's Four Nations match against the Kiwis in Toulouse.

Coach Bobbie Goulding has turned to Limoux prop Arty Shead and former Catalans forward Andrew Bentley following the loss of Remi Casty through injury and David Ferriol to suspension.

Both men qualify for France through residency, the 24-year-old Bentley linking up with younger brother Kane, who was a tryscorer in last Friday's 34-12 defeat by England.

New Zealand: 1 – Lance Hohaia (NZ Warriors); 2 – Sam Perrett (Sydney Roosters), 3 – Steve Matai (Manly), 4 – Junior Sa'u (Newcastle), 5 – Bryson Goodwin (Canterbury); 6 – Benji Marshall (Wests Tigers, capt), 7 – Nathan Fien (St George Illawarra); 8 - Frank-Paul Nuuausala (Sydney Roosters), 9 – Thomas Leuluai (Wigan), 10 – Fuifui Moimoi (Parramatta); 11 – Adam Blair (Melbourne), 12 – Frank Pritchard (Penrith), 13 – Isaia Soliola (Sydney Roosters).

Subs: 14 – Isaac Luke (South Sydney), 15 - Greg Eastwood (Canterbury), 16 – Ben Matulino (NZ Warriors), 17 – Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Manly), 18 – Jason Nightingale (St George Illawarra), 19 – Kieran Foran (Manly).
