Scott McDonald and Vince Grella are the notable absentees from Pim Verbeek's 23-man squad for the Socceroos upcoming Asian Cup qualifier against Oman in Muscat.

Mark Bresciano returns to the squad after missing the past two matches with a knee strain while Bruce Djite, Brad Jones and Mile Sterjovski are also included along with Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici.

Grella was injured in the match against the Netherlands in Sydney in October and has not made an appearance for his club Blackburn Rovers since, while it is not known yet why McDonald, who has been in good form with Celtic, has missed selection.

The squad contains three players from the A-League, Craig Moore, Jason Culina and Sterjovski.

Sterjovski has not played since the World Cup qualifier against Japan at the MCG in June.

The 2006 World Cup squad member has had a strong debut season with Perth, scoring five goals despite missing games through injury.

He only missed selection for the matches against the Netherlands and Oman in October because of fitness.

Tim Cahill, who scored against Oman in Melbourne, has been named despite the reservations of Everton coach David Moyes, along with fellow regulars Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill, Brett Emerton, Mark Schwarzer and Luke Wilkshire.

Australia currently sits on top of Group B level with Oman on four points from three games.
