Spain has turned the tables on the Kookaburras, winning game two of the two-match series 2-1 in Perth on Sunday night.
After losing the opening game 8-2 on Saturday, Spain came out with an attacking mindset and had the better of Australia throughout the opening half.
But against the run of play, the Kookaburras scored the opening goal in the dying seconds of the half when veteran Liam De Young fired home from the top of the circle.
Pol Amat got Spain back on level terms when he scored in the opening minutes of the second half and then with 10 minutes remaining Xavi Lleonart put the visitors in front with a cracking shot into the top right corner.
The Kookaburras had one final chance to level from a penalty corner after the final siren, but they squandered it.
Australia coach Ric Charlesworth said the team still had plenty to work on leading into next week's Champions Trophy in Melbourne.
"We have a lot of things to repair before next week's Champions Trophy and what it tells me we are not solid and nowhere near as solid as we can be and I have thought so from the start. This just underlines it and we have a lot of work to do before our first game," he said.
