Newcastle on a roll

Newcastle on a roll

19/10/2009 6:34 AM

Newcastle Falcons maintained their perfect record in the Amlin European Challenge Cup with a thumping 45-3 victory over Albi.

Wing Danny Williams opened the scoring with only seven minutes on the clock before prop Lawrence Ovens crossed with just over 20 minutes gone.

New Zealand's Jimmy Gopperth and Charlie Amesbury also crossed the line to complete the seven-try rout, with Gopperth adding five conversions to finish with 15 points.

In Sunday's other game, Leeds Carnegie put its poor Guinness Premiership form to one side with a 37-13 win over Rugby Parma.

On Saturday, Wasps cruised to a convincing victory with a nine-try, 57-0 rout of Roma.

Dan Ward-Smith and Dan Leo scored two tries apiece while Paul Sackey, Tom Varndell, Charlie Beech and Joe Ward all crossed, along with Eoghan Hickey, who added six conversions in a 17-point haul.

Worcester made it a continental double for the Guinness Premiership sides with a 38-5 victory in Madrid.

Miles Benjamin and Scotland centre Alex Grove both crossed twice as Mike Ruddock's men coasted to a comfortable away win.
Madrid scored their only try through wing Matias Tudela's first-half strike but the visitors had the bonus point in the bag inside 31 minutes as Jonny Arr also crossed in the five-try success.
The Warriors ran out victors despite the loss of five key players with wing Marcel Garvey, centre Dale Rasmussen, prop Matt Mullan, lock Graham Kitchener and Shaun Ruwers all ruled out through injury.

In the other pool ties, Bourgoin edged out Bucuresti Oaks 21-19 on the road and Castres hammered Italian side Rovigo 76-11 in a 12-try blitz.

Samoan No.8 Joe Tekori led the way with a hat-trick, Yoan Audrin bagged a brace while there were tries from Rodrigo Capo Ortega, Thomas Sanchou, Marc Andreu, Yannick Caballero, Thomas Bouquie, Mathieu Bonello and a penalty try.

Connacht made it two wins from two matches at the start of its campaign by coming from behind to beat Montpellier 22-19 on Friday.

Home side Montpellier, who beat Worcester in their Pool Two opener, led 16-10 at half-time after a try from Ollie Smith and 11 points from the boot of Federico Todeschini.

Fionn Carr had crossed for a Connacht try, which Miah Nikora converted. Nikora had earlier kicked a penalty.

Carr and former Chiefs and Highlanders back Niva Ta'auso added further tries after the interval as Connacht bustled its way back into the match, with Ian Keatley converting Carr's score.

Todeschini's second-half penalty was all Montpellier could muster as Connacht successfully clung to its narrow lead in the closing stages.

The night's other match, in Pool Five, saw Montauban defeat Petrarca 27-10, with tries from Silviu Florea, Jean-Emmanuel Cassin and former Hurricanes wing Shannon Paku.
