Former first five-eighth trio Naas Botha, Henry Honiball and Braam van Straaten have all given their backing to Morne Steyn to fill the number 10 spot for South Africa in the upcoming series against the British and Irish Lions.
The Bulls No.10 has been in outstanding form in the Super 14 this season and is again likely to be a key player in this weekend's final against the Chiefs in Pretoria.
Steyn kicked 21 points in last week's semi-final with the Crusaders, including a record four drop goals, and, with an injury to Ruan Pienaar, should be a Springbok certainty.
"He is playing the best rugby of his career and has more strengths than any other would-be fly-half," Honiball told www.sport24.com.
"On Saturday he played a very big role in the Bulls' victory over the Crusaders. He must be a shoo-in for the Bok squad."
Sharks utility man Pienaar is thought to be the favoured choice of national coach Peter de Villiers, but sustained an ankle injury during the closing stages of the Super 14 and Botha also believes Steyn should be selected.
"He must be a sure pick against the Lions," said Botha. "He gave good performances throughout the Super 14, and he was once again excellent against the Crusaders on Saturday.
"He does everything brilliantly. All that remains is a chance for him to make his mark at Test level.
"The fact that he's good at drop kicking is equally important. When the Bulls needed points at crucial times, he was the one who kept the scoreboard rolling."
Van Straaten would also like to see the number 10 jersey being filled by Steyn when the first of three Tests kicks off on June 20.
He added: "In Test rugby there is no place for elaborate moves.
"His tactical kicking is excellent, he knows how to keep the ball in front of his forwards and how to make his opponents turn around.
"It is clear that both he and Vlok Cilliers (the Bulls' kicking coach) spent quite some time polishing his kicking.
"His four drop goals against the Crusaders bear testimony to this. He seems to be the solution for South Africa against the Lions."
