Third seed Samantha Stosur was untroubled as she eased into the second round of the Japan Open in Osaka.
Stosur was too good for Russian Alexandra Panova 6-2 6-4 and will now take on Akiko Morigami or Anastasia Rodionova.
The news was not so good for fellow Australian Sophie Ferguson, the qualifier losing 6-1 7-5 to sixth seed Aleksandra Wozniak.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who reached the US Open final in September, began the defence of her title with a comfortable 6-4 6-1 win over Japan's Ayumi Morita.
It was a good day all round for the seeds, with second seed and former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli beating Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 7-5.
There was disappointment for the home crowd as veteran Kimiko Date Krumm, who had received a wildcard, lost in three sets to American Jill Craybas.
Meanwhile top seed Flavia Pennetta made light work of American Meghann Shaughnessy as she marched through to the second round of the Generali Ladies in Linz with a 6-1 6-1 victory.
The Italian forced 12 break points on her way through to the second round.
Sixth seed Sorana Cirstea was sent home after losing 6-3 6-3 to qualifier Julia Goerges, but all the other seeds in action survived.
No.5 Iveta Benesova saw off Stephanie Gehrlein 7-5 6-0, while seventh seed Lucie Safarova powered past Patricia Mayr 6-2 6-1 and No.8 Sara Errani beat Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-2 6-3.
Also going through were Anna-Lena Groenefeld, a 7-5 6-1 winner over Roberta Vinci, Tatjana Malek, who beat Aravane Rezai 7-5 7-5, and Olga Govortsova, a 6-2 6-7 (7-9) 6-2 winner over Petra Martic.
