Hewitt eases past Querrey

17/03/2008 4:49 PM

Lleyton Hewitt has cruised past American Sam Querrey to reach the third round of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.

The Australian turned in an impressive display to advance through in straight sets 6-4 6-3 after one hour and 22 minutes.

Hewitt was in control for much of the match breaking the world No. 48 on four occasions and losing his own serve just once.

The win takes Hewitt's 2008 win loss record to 8-5 and sets up a third round meeting with 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Frenchman Gilles Simon 7-5 6-4.

Earlier, German Tommy Haas scored the upset of the day eliminating sixth seed Andy Roddick in the second round.

Roddick was unable to maintain the form that saw him secure his second ATP title for the year last week in Dubai, losing 6-4 6-4 in 85 minutes.

Haas broke Roddick's serve in the ninth game of the first set and again in the seventh game of the second set before closing out the match on his third match point.

The 29-year-old improved his win-loss record against Roddick to 7-3 and will next face either Spain's Fernando Verdasco or Romania's Victor Hanescu.

In other results, Andy Murray came from behind to claim a place in the third round with a hard-fought win over Jurgen Melzer.

The British No.1, who is seeded 11 and received a first-round bye, lost the first four games of a fractious match but recovered to progress 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Both players reacted angrily to various decisions by the officials but Murray was the more composed by the end as world No.85 Melzer slipped from his early high standards.

Murray will now play Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, who saw off South African qualifier Rik de Voest 6-3 7-6 (7-2).

Murray admitted Melzer's strong start had caught him by surprise.

"I think the first service game that I got broken in I had one double fault and he was taking the returns off my second serve so early," he told Sky Sports.

"He hit a lot of clean winners and I was just a little slow to get off the mark."

"But after 4-0 I got back to 4-1 and I had break points to go to 4-3 and he had two net cords in the one point."

"After that I thought I played a good match. I felt really comfortable off the ground and I moved forward a lot more than I have done, the volleys were very solid."

Meanwhile in the women's draw, second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the fourth round by rallying for a 6-1 4-6 6-3 triumph over Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

A finalist here last year, Kuznetsova was sluggish in the first set before turning things around to win in one hour and 48 minutes.

Kuznetsova will next face Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, a 6-0 6-2 winner over Aiko Nakamura of Japan.

Fourth seed Maria Sharapova cruised past Eleni Daniilidou 7-5 6-3 while Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko swept past Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo 6-1 6-2.
