Australian Open organisers have decided to play the 2009 women's singles final at night, confirming they were realising a long term intention.
The news has been supported by both the WTA and reigning champion Maria Sharapova.
Tournament Director Craig Tiley had been thinking of the change for a number of years and is already looking forward to the prospect of a packed Rod Laver Arena on a Saturday night.
"We have been thinking about a night final for the women ever since the men's night final proved such an outstanding success," Tiley said.
"Our research has shown that the Australian tennis public would prefer the women's singles final to be played at night."
"It will add to the glitz, glamour and prestige of what we already believe is an incredible highlight of our tournament.”
“Imagine Sharapova defending her title against Ivanovic or one of the Williams sisters before a packed house at Rod Laver Arena on a balmy Saturday night in January … it will be the most sought after ticket in town.”
Reigning Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova, who just won her quarterfinal match against Patty Schnyder at the WTA event in Rome has welcomed the move.
"The atmosphere at Melbourne Park at night is great and the cooler conditions allow the players to really produce their best," she said.
"I think this move will further showcase a great sporting event and is good for both players and fans."
A night final is expected to attract a larger domestic television, radio and internet audience.
But Tiley said the major motivation for the move was to create an even more exciting tennis experience for the fan.
"We have very strong indications from Australian Open fans that a Saturday night final is their preference."
