Stosur leads Australia

Stosur inspires Fed Cup triumph

07/02/2010 10:12 PM

World No.11 Samantha Stosur led from the front as Australia defeated Spain 3-2 in their Fed Cup tie in Adelaide on Sunday.

Stosur featured in all three of Australia's winning rubbers as she combined with 39-year-old Rennae Stubbs to seal the triumph in the deciding doubles match.

The pair defeated Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez and Nurai Llagostera Vives 6-4 6-2.

Earlier in the day, Stosur easily accounted for Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1 6-3.

Australia then pulled a surprise when it selected Alicia Molik, instead of Casey Dellacqua, for the fourth singles match.

However, the decision backfired with Carla Suarez Navaroo crushing the comeback queen 6-1 6-1.

Australia now progresses to an April play-off where it has the chance to return to the elite World Group for the first time since 2004.
